Both are 75-ohm coaxial cables, but RG6 has a larger diameter and thicker dielectric, delivering lower attenuation and better performance at higher frequencies and over longer runs. RG59 is thinner, with higher loss, making it better suited to shorter, lower-frequency applications like legacy analog CCTV. RG6 typically uses a larger center conductor (often 18 AWG, as in our SmartWire RG6) and more robust shielding, supporting HD video, CATV, and satellite over longer distances.
BACnet is a building automation protocol, not a specific cable; when run over BACnet MS/TP it uses the RS-485 physical layer and therefore benefits from a 120-ohm, twisted-pair (often shielded) cable. RS-232 is single-ended, point-to-point, and short-range (typically up to about 50 ft), using separate conductors for TX/RX/GND and generally does not require impedance-controlled twisted pair. RS-485 is differential, supports multi-drop networks, and long distances (up to thousands of feet); it requires a 120-ohm twisted pair (2-wire for half-duplex or 4-wire for full-duplex), commonly with shielding for noise immunity.
